The American Lung Association is seeking an experienced, enthusiastic, and results driven individual to serve in the role of Chief of Staff (COS), reporting to and working closely with the President & CEO.

The American Lung Association is seeking an experienced, enthusiastic, and results driven individual to serve in the role of Chief of Staff (COS), reporting to and working closely with the President & CEO. 

The COS serves as a strategic partner to the President & CEO and Executive Leadership Team (ELT) and has organizational-wide accountability for strategic planning and new business initiatives that integrate across functions of the Association.  Works with the Board Chair and President & CEO to determine the work and schedules of the board committees. 

The COS will partner closely with the ELT to develop, communicate and execute strategic plans across the Association. The COS will work closely with the CEO on setting the agenda and content for National Board and ELT meetings. The COS will be responsible for ensuring an effective cross-functional team approach is used throughout the organization.

Strategy Development and Project Management:

  • Drives the annual strategic planning process and works closely with the Executive Leadership Team (ELT) to define strategic priorities 
  • Uses a data-driven approach to inform strategy, measure results, and make decisions  
  • Creates the framework for the development of new strategic initiatives to meet the Associations annual work plan including realistic investment budgets, staffing needs, and projected ROIs
  • Serves as the senior project manager to ensure timely and effective completion of key initiatives. This involves: 
    • Supporting ELT in scoping, planning and execution of strategic enterprise initiatives 
    • Ensuring a cross functional, collaborative approach 
    • Determining critical milestones and key performance indicators are met 
    • Guiding internal parties to meet sequential targets and report progress in a timely manner to CEO and ELT
  • Develop high quality and scalable processes to improve how we operate as the organization grows and evolves
  • Establish and reinforce structure and process to manage a diverse portfolio of large, complex projects 
  • Be an engaged and active part of the ELT 
  • Be a role model and exemplify the ALA culture of diversity, collaboration, and teamwork  

Board Governance:

  • Work with the Board Chair and President & CEO, to determine the work and schedules of the Board of Directors and standing committees
  • Serve as staff to the Board of Directors, Executive Committee and Governance Committee 
  • Coordinate and prepare board meetings, materials, and track outcomes 
  • Attend Committee meetings and represent the President & CEO when not available to join 
  • Acts as the liaison between President & CEO and other executives and stakeholders to ensure consistent communication and involvement or decision-making at the proper time

Support President & CEO:

  • Be a sounding board to the President & CEO for new ideas and initiatives 
  • Establish content, strategy and agendas for ELT meetings, all staff meetings, executive offsites and Board of Directors meetings 
  • Facilitate feedback from staff across the organization to the President & CEO to ensure suggestions, concerns and perspectives are considered.
  • Support President & CEO by capturing key meeting take-aways and assuming responsibility for completion of action items
  • Identify, define & drive high-impact projects throughout the organization
  • Coordinate the development and execution of strategic initiatives as directed by the President & CEO 


Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business or a related field from an accredited college or university required; MBA or equivalent advanced degree preferred 
  • 7 to 10 + years of experience with strategic planning, business management, and/or leadership of transformation projects in a dynamic and fluid environment 
  • Industry experience in health care, research & development, nonprofit, or public health preferred 
  • Experience working with for-profit or not-for-profit boards and their associated committees
  • Experience identifying and using data to create strategic plans and the framework for execution of new strategies 
  • Experience communicating organizational goals and results to a broad internal and external audience
  • Proven experience organizing and directing high-performance teams
  • Experience navigating complex, matrixed organizations and negotiating optimal solutions across cross-functional teams 
  • Successful experience working across a wide variety of departments to achieve success at the highest level

  • Highly experienced with Excel for reporting and analytics, Word and PowerPoint   
  • Ability to effectively manage a heavy workload, competing priorities and tight deadlines 
  • Ability to identify and synthesize information that will help inform decisions that represent the mission, values and strategic plan of the organization and leaders
  • Ability to handle highly confidential and sensitive materials and situations
  • Strong Executive presence, skilled communicator
  • Strategic thinker with highly developed analytical and critical thinking abilities 
  • Experienced organizing and running cross-functional projects
