American Lung Association: FDA Puts Kids, Health First in Landmark Decision to End Sale of All Juul E-Cigarettes

Today, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it issued a marketing denial order for Juul, meaning that all Juul products can no longer be sold in the U.S. American Lung Association’s President and CEO Harold Wimmer issued the following statement in response of FDA’s important announcement:

“Today’s announcement is long overdue and most welcome. The American Lung Association commends FDA for following the science and denying Juul the ability to sell its products that are clearly marketed to addict a new generation of youth to tobacco.

“Juul is largely responsible for the youth vaping epidemic, where it used the same tactics as the major cigarette companies to prey on youth, including appealing flavors, deep price discounts, youth-focused marketing campaigns and high levels of nicotine to addict them. Juul was the most popular e-cigarette among teens for several years and remains among the most popular today. Ending the sale of all Juul products, including its menthol flavor, sends the message to companies that their blatant disregard for public health will not be tolerated.

“Now FDA must be vigilant in ensuring that any product that does not receive a marketing order, including Juul, is swiftly and completely removed from the marketplace starting now.”

The Lung Association has resources to prevent tobacco use and help youth quit, specifically designed for schools, parents and teens, including Get Your Head Out of the Cloud, our Vape-Free Schools Initiative and more resources available online.
