Chrissi was working at PENN1 when she noticed a sign for the annual Fight For Air Climb happening in the building. As someone who enjoys working out and has a vastly competitive spirit, she decided she wanted to participate. She belonged to a running group and had completed other races, but this climb was a new challenge.

Carl was in his second year as a firefighter with the Bloomfield Fire Department. Unhealthy air is an occupational hazard and being in shape is key to doing the job right, so the Fire Department liked to support the Lung Association’s mission by participating in the Fight For Air Climb. For firefighters, this event was not only a training activity but also a great way to create camaraderie and foster friendly competition among peers. Like his fellow firemen, Carl suited up in all his gear to climb all 984 stairs to the top of PENN1.

That year, both Chrissi and Carl would end up winning first place in their prospective groups. Which is why, at the afterparty, Carl approached Chrissi and offered her his seat. Over a beer they talked about their lives, and he joked about getting together to ‘make first-place babies.’ “He was so different than other people I had dated, just such a gentleman,” Chrissi recalls.

Thus began a love story that eleven years later boasts a happy seven-year marriage and two beautiful children. The Climb event where they met continues to be part of their story, as every year they return to participate and celebrate the anniversary of their connection. Chrissi even won first place at the Climb the year she was pregnant with her daughter.

But Carl and Chrissi’s devotion to the event isn’t just sentimental — it’s deeply personal. As a firefighter family, they understand the dangers of air pollution. Respiratory diseases remain a big health issue for firefighters and emergency responders who face increased exposure to gases, chemicals and smoke in the line of duty. Additionally, Chrissi’s family has a long history of lung diseases, including COPD and mesothelioma, and has many friends with lung health problems. “I was shocked when a close family friend died of asthma related complications. It seems like something that people shouldn’t be dying from, we should have the knowledge to treat it,” Chrissi said. This is why they are so passionate about raising awareness and funds for lung health research.

This Valentine’s Day, Chrissi and Carl are sharing their story to inspire others to think outside the box. Their advice for singles? “Get active! Events like the Fight For Air Climb are a fun way to meet someone outgoing and playful — great qualities in a partner.” After all, as they would be the first to tell you, “Couples who race together stay together.”

The Fight For Air Climb NYC returns to PENN1 on March 22, but other events are being held nationwide. Learn more about how you can participate and support lung health and cleaner air for everyone by finding an event near you.
