Lung Cancer Survivors, Caregivers Push for Research & Public Health Funding - On Wednesday, March 20, LUNG FORCE Heroes—people living with lung cancer, their loved ones and advocates from across the country—traveled to Washington, D.C. to advocate for lifesaving research and public health funding. As a part of the American Lung Association LUNG FORCE Advocacy Day, they met with members of Congress to share their stories, and ask them to support $51.3 billion in research funding for the National Institutes of Health and $11.6 billion in funding for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
FDA’s Graphic Cigarette Warnings Upheld - In a major victory for public health, a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit unanimously upheld graphic health warnings on cigarette packs and advertising required under a 2020 FDA rule. This decision reverses a ruling by a lower court judge that blocked the warnings. Rejecting tobacco industry arguments, the appellate court found that the FDA’s warnings are “factual and uncontroversial” and do not violate the First Amendment. Learn more.
5 Facts about Lung Nodules and Staging
Close to 238,000 people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with lung cancer this year. The diagnosis process usually starts with a suspected “nodule.” The process of “suspected nodule” to treatment (or other next steps) can be confusing to a person impacted and their family. To help empower people who are newly diagnosed with lung cancer with critical knowledge about lung nodules, staging and treatment, the American Lung Association and Olympus partnered to launch a new educational campaign. Good News: Cleaner Cars and Trucks Rules are Final
In March, EPA announced two sets of new standards to clean up air pollution from vehicles. Together, these strong standards will limit emissions from light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles beginning in model year 2027. These long-awaited standards will help make passenger cars, SUVs, vans, trucks, school and transit buses, and big vocational vehicles cleaner. The Lung Association celebrated the rules and was quoted in numerous media outlets, including in NPR, AP, and the New York Times celebrating the trucks rule. Please take a moment to say thanks by signing our updated “Don’t Delay, Clean Air Today” petition. It now expresses appreciation for the final cars and trucks rules and pushes to get the remaining rules on the to-do list across the finish line.

Caring for Patients During Climate Disasters - Dr. Alexander Azan, an internal medicine physician and climate health research fellow in the Department of Population Health at NYU Langone, felt unprepared to appropriately care for patients when wildfire smoke covered New York City last summer. In our recent blog, Dr. Azan describes how last year’s wildfires were an urgent reminder that doctors and health systems need to adapt the ways they care for patients to meet the new challenges posed by climate change, including advocating for stronger federal protections from air pollution.
