The National Radon Action Plan (NRAP) serves as a framework to guide nationwide action to eliminate preventable lung cancer from radon in the U.S. by expanding protections for all communities and buildings. NRAP sets goals for the nation to find, fix and prevent high indoor radon levels in homes and buildings; to prevent lung cancer deaths; and to save lives in those buildings over time. The American Lung Association, along with representatives of federal agencies, state and tribal radon programs, nonprofit organizations and the radon services industry have worked together to develop and implement this coordinated plan to reduce radon risk.

The National Radon Action Plan is organized into four goal areas:

This goal area seeks to institutionalize radon control requirements in the rules, codes and standards that govern how buildings are financed, developed, constructed and maintained.

This goal area addresses the critical need for increasing access to sources of financing, incentives and local programs to ensure that all communities across the housing sector have access to radon risk reduction services. This goal also supports state cancer control programs in addressing radon.

This goal area seeks to expand the availability of high-quality radon services in communities nationwide by increasing the availability of trained and certified measurement and mitigation professionals.

This goal area seeks to develop effective radon messaging and build capacity with national and local trusted messengers to deliver radon health risk education to all communities.

Resources for Advocates and Decision Makers

In collaboration with the National Radon Action Plan, the American Lung association has developed data reports, policy briefs, case studies, webinars and more to support decision-makers and other community leaders in prioritizing radon risk reduction in their communities.
