Healthy Air Tools for Schools and Districts

Tools and programs to help schools improve indoor air quality for a healthy and safe learning environment.

Ensuring good indoor air quality in schools is an important part of creating a healthy learning environment. The resources below offer tools to assess air quality issues in schools and how to address them.

Creating Healthy Indoor Air in Schools

The American Lung Association has created the Indoor Air Quality in Schools Guide to assist schools in improving the quality of their indoor air. The guide provides an overview of indoor air quality and shares tools that schools can use to improve air quality. The guide also offers guidance for navigating CARES/CRSSA funding to improve air quality in schools.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in partnership with the American Lung Association, has designed the Indoor Air Quality Tools for Schools Action Kit that can help your school provide healthy air. The program gives schools the information and skills they need to manage air quality in a low-cost, practical manner. It helps schools prevent potential problems and efficiently manage them should they occur.

Tools for Schools includes a downloadable app; easy-to-use checklists with a flexible, step-by-step guide; facts on indoor air pollution sources, symptoms, and solutions; training videos; and sample documents.

If your school is renovating or building a new school, the IAQ Design Tools for Schools can help you improve the air indoors.

Asthma-Friendly Schools Initiative Toolkit

The Asthma-Friendly Schools Initiative provides a framework and tools that communities and schools can use to work together on a comprehensive approach to asthma management, including planning tools, policy recommendations, and education programs.

Vape-Free Schools Initiative

The Vape-Free Schools Initiative provides school administrators and educators with tools and programs to support students in living vape-free. The initiative includes an alternative-to-suspension program for students found vaping, smoking or chewing on school property and a voluntary vaping/tobacco cessation program for youth wanting to quit for good.

Creating Lung-Friendly Environments for Youth

Creating Lung-Friendly Environments for Youth offers strategies to create a lung healthy environment by improving clean air at school.
