Spotlight On Rural Initiatives Strengthening Equity (R.I.S.E)
Rural Initiatives Strengthening Equity (RISE), A project of the California Health Collaborative, works to support rural tobacco projects throughout California by leveraging resources, data, and educational opportunities to partners throughout rural jurisdictions. RISE works with other statewide coordinating centers to reduce tobacco-related disparities among priority populations. We are incredibly grateful for their partnership and collaboration throughout our current and former projects

Smokefree Multi-Unit Housing
- The North Valley Project is focusing on Smokefree Multi-Unit Housing in Gridley (Butte County) and in Marysville (Yuba County).
- Smokefree Multi-Unit Housing reduces the risk of secondhand smoke drifting between units, through vents, windows, and cracks in the foundation. Enhanced and enforced strong policies protect residents from exposure to toxic chemicals. A smokefree environment reduces the risk of fire hazards and creates healthier living environments by improving air quality and reducing the risk of respiratory issues. This can lower healthcare costs and improve quality of life for residents. Additionally, stronger policies protect children, elderly residents, and those with health conditions who are more vulnerable to smoke exposure. Smokefree housing promotes a stronger sense of community and well-being where every resident can breathe clean air.
Smokefree Outdoor Air
- The Lung Association’s North Valley Tobacco Project is currently working on providing education and promoting Smokefree Outdoor Public Places in Gridley (Butte County), and Marysville (Yuba County).
- Smokefree environments protect everyone from secondhand smoke, which is harmful to health. Specific populations such as children, the elderly, or individuals with respiratory conditions are vulnerable to poor health outcomes with exposure to secondhand smoke. Clean air and a healthier environment encourages people to enjoy outdoor spaces without exposure to toxic chemicals. Smokefree areas also reduce litter, as cigarette butts are a major source of pollution. These spaces promote healthier lifestyle choices and are inclusive of individuals who may be attempting to quit or can encourage users to quit.
