Sara S., OR

My mom smoked for 42 years, and she died five days ago from cancer. Three years ago, my mom was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer of the parotid gland.

Though this is an aggressive type of cancer that typically affects people who smoke, she went into remission. We thought she would be OK. But scans showed cancer in one lung. Unfortunately, it was stage 4 pretty quickly.

We tried treating it to give her more time. But ultimately, I stopped the immunotherapy because she got too sick. My mom made it for a year and a half until it spread to her spine.

Once she got bacterial pneumonia and sepsis a month before her death, everything happened quickly. We let her go. In the end, I made sure she was in no pain.

This is what cancer from smoking did to my mom. I hope her story can help at least one person. Smoking is not cool or a popular idea. If you are smoking, please get help.
