Free radon testing is available right now. The American Lung Association has partnered with Protect Environmental to raise awareness about radon gas exposure and highlight the important need for more test kits to empower communities to take action to prevent radon-induced lung cancer. Protect Environmental is offering free radon test kits to empower communities to take action to prevent radon-induced lung cancer.
Dangerous radon levels have been found in every state and many communities remain under-tested. Any building may be at risk for unsafe radon levels.
Radon is an odorless, tasteless, and colorless radioactive gas released as uranium decays underground. Radon can enter buildings through gaps, cracks, and crevices in the foundation of a building, unknowingly exposing the occupants to a radioactive, cancer-causing gas. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. (only behind smoking) and is responsible for over 20,000 deaths each year. The goal of the partnership between the American Lung Association and Protect Environmental is to get more homes tested, and to save lives by preventing radon-induced lung cancer in communities across our country.
The only way to know your radon risk at home is to test.
“I’ve been to too many homes where no one knew to test for radon until someone in the home got the devastating diagnosis of lung cancer. Taking action to reduce exposure to radon through regular testing and mitigation is an investment in the lung health of everyone in the building and could be a lifesaving improvement.”
