Keely K., HI

I am a lung cancer survivor! I am “Beyond Grateful” to be alive, to breathe and to be on this earth for many more years.

My lung cancer journey began in March 2024, when I was diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer, mucinous adenocarcinoma 3B. This news shook me to my core. During a routine CT scan with my cardiologist, they found an abnormal nodule on my lower left lung. After my biopsy confirmed the cancer, I underwent a lobectomy in April to remove half of my lower left lung. My surgeon removed the cancer, and it was determined that it had not spread to my lymph nodes. I was relieved that I didn’t have to undergo any additional treatment. I am cancer-free!

Having experienced firsthand the impact of lung cancer, I have become a passionate advocate for raising awareness, supporting research and securing funding for advancements in treatment and early detection. I am personally focused on Asian women who have lung cancer. Studies have identified several genetic mutations that play a significant role in the development of lung cancer in this demographic. Understanding these genetic markers is crucial for developing targeted therapies and improving outcomes for Asian women affected by lung cancer.

I believe that progress in the fight against lung cancer is essential, and I am committed to helping fund research that will save lives, provide new possibilities for those affected and, ultimately, lead to a cure for this devastating disease.

Today, I am processing everything emotionally and physically. I am healing, taking things day by day. This lung cancer journey has changed me. I see the world through different eyes. I am so thankful for my village! The support from my husband, daughter, care team, friends and family was priceless. When they say it takes a village, it sure does!

As I write this, I am reminded that the one-year anniversary of my diagnosis is coming up in a few weeks. As I reflect on the past year, I realize life is precious. Time is priceless. Live your life to the fullest and spend your time with intention. So get those checkups and tests. Don’t put them off. You are important! And love—love yourself, your life, your people. Love with all you’ve got!

I will always be “Beyond Grateful.”
