I’m writing today to share why getting a CT lung scan is so important.
When I went to see my primary physician he suggested I get a scan. At the time, I was a healthy 54-year-old and had been a smoker for over 20 years. My first thought was, Why? I’m fine. But he reassured me—it was just a preventative measure.
I put it off for a month, quit smoking, and finally went in for the scan. Since I work for a hospital, I didn’t think much of it. But when I got my results back, they found cancer in my upper left lobe. I was devastated. My first thought was, Oh my God, I’m going to die.
Thankfully, the cancer was caught early—it was only 1.3 cm. I had surgery, which removed a third of my upper lobe, and today, I am cancer-free!
This experience has made me a strong advocate for preventative care. If my doctor hadn’t recommended that scan, my outcome could have been much different.
That’s my story.
