If you have been newly diagnosed with black lung disease, you may have a lot of questions. In addition to partnering with your healthcare team, the steps below can help you better understand and manage your diagnosis.

Step 1:

Learn More

  • Learn more about how black lung disease impacts your lungs, treatment options and how to best manage your disease.
  • There are a number of resources available for coal workers who have black lung disease:
    • Under the Black Lung Benefits Act, coal miners who are disabled by pneumoconiosis are entitled to worker’s compensation and other benefits.
    • Health Resources and Service Administration’s (HRSA) Black Lung Clinics can be found nationwide and are focused on providing black lung disease patients and their families with education, primary care and other services.
    • The Black Lung Center of Excellence supports these Black Lung Clinics Programs and provides additional services, as well.

Step 2:

Take Care of Yourself

  • Receiving a diagnosis can be hard. Visit the Patient & Caregiver Network Wellness Hub to find support through practical resources and tools to help navigate your journey.
  • You will want to stay up-to-date on vaccinations that your healthcare provider recommends.

Step 3:

Connect with Others

No person facing a chronic lung disease should go through it alone. There are online and in-person support groups available. Finding a support group early in your journey will provide you with more opportunities to get information about your disease, empower you to better manage your disease and give you the support you need.
