Addressing Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

The American Lung Association is a proud recipient of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Approach to Chronic Disease Education and Awareness grant. Through the Addressing COPD project, the Lung Association utilized a comprehensive public health approach to improve prevention, early diagnosis, treatment, and management of COPD.

Since September 2022, we achieved the following:

  • Disseminated National COPD Data Trends – November 2022
The COPD Trends Brief is an annual report using the latest CDC data about COPD morbidity and mortality. The report includes quality of life measures and identifies patterns of COPD burden locally and across the country.
  • Shared State COPD Data Trends - November 2023
The COPD State Briefs include data about prevention, diagnosis, health outcomes, and treatment of COPD in all 50 states and DC. It also offers public health and healthcare professionals five ways to reduce the burden of COPD in their state. Promotional opportunities included a nationwide and state specific press release, virtual media tour, organic social media and e-communication articles.
  • Released the COPD National Indicator Report – March 2024
The COPD National Indicator Report addresses trends in COPD, identifies health inequities, and evidence-based strategies to prevent, diagnose, treat and manage COPD.

  • Created the COPD Screening, Assessment and Prediction Tool- June 2023
This one pager provides an overview of the existing, validated surveys, assessments, or tools in the areas of COPD screening, exposures, control, medication adherence, and predicting risk for exacerbations.
  • Promoted GOLD’s Could it be COPD? Questionnaire- April 2023
This short, five question tool was developed by the Global Initiative for Chronic Lung Disease (GOLD) and has been scientifically evaluated and shown to identify people who are more likely to have COPD.
  • Created the Workplace Exposure Questionnaire-April 2024
This short questionnaire was created to gain insight about workplace lung exposures, symptoms of concern, and to help individuals understand steps to protect their lung health while on the job.

Outcomes

Evaluation metrics are being collected throughout the project and a final report will be compiled at the end of the grant period. In the interim, a year one healthcare and public health professional survey was distributed to past participants of the professional programs. 74 professionals responded to this survey.

Lessons Learned

Lessons learned are being compiled and will be shared in a final report at the end of the grant period.
