American Lung Association Applauds California Announcement to Offer Free Asthma Inhalers for Public Schools

Today, Governor Gavin Newsom announced a first-of-its-kind initiative that the state of California will be providing asthma quick-relief (rescue) inhalers, spacers and training to all public schools in the state at no cost. In response, Harold Wimmer, President and CEO of the American Lung Association, issued the following statement:

“The American Lung Association applauds California for leading the way in protecting children and adults experiencing respiratory distress in schools. This first-of- its-kind effort to provide free rescue inhalers to all public schools in the state will ensure that virtually all children in K-12 public schools will have access to this lifesaving medication.”

“In addition, it is very encouraging that the state prioritized the health of children by including this in the state budget for the next three years and by offering training for school staff. This comprehensive plan offers a model for other states who are looking to protect the health of children with asthma or kids who are experiencing respiratory distress at school.

“Asthma is the leading cause of school absenteeism, accounting for 7.9 million missed school days nationwide. In California, there are 2.4 million kids living with asthma. Providing free inhalers and spacers in all public schools will not only help ensure the safety of these kids, but also kids who have not yet been diagnosed with asthma and are experiencing respiratory distress for the first time. Policies like the one California just announced will save lives, so we call on other states to prioritize children’s health and fund inhalers, spacers and training in all schools.”

The American Lung Association offers several resources regarding stock asthma medication in schools here, as well as materials for parents and school staff, including Asthma Basics, Open Airways for Schools, Kickin’ Asthma and the Lung Helpline.
