American Lung Association Applauds New Resources for Clean Trucks in Washington

On April 29, 2026, the Department of Ecology announced the launch of the Washington Zero-Emission Incentive Program (WAZIP) to support increased use of zero-emission vehicles in commercial fleets. Businesses will have the opportunity to request support for the purchase of trucks, agricultural equipment, forklifts, locomotives, and other equipment. Replacing fleet equipment that produces diesel exhaust and other harmful pollutants with zero-emission technologies is a critical clean air and health strategy.

Carrie Nyssen, Snior Director of Advocacy with the American Lung Association issued the following statement:

The launch of new tools to clean our air is an important step to protecting health against pollution. More clean vehicles and fewer diesel emissions is a recipe for cleaner air and healthier kids in healthier Washington communities. Beyond investments in fleet turnover, Washington must continue to set strong policies to curb pollution and drive clean air progress forward.”

Last week, the American Lung Association issued the 27th annual “State of the Air” report highlighting the importance of clean air for children, progress made in cleaning the air and the challenge of maintaining that progress. The report noted that more than 6 in 10 Washingtonians – more than 5 million people – live in a community impacted by unhealthy air.
