The Electric School Bus Solution for New York

Electrifying school buses means cleaner air for children. We’re urging lawmakers in Albany to invest at least $300 million over five years so school districts can make the switch from diesel to zero-emission electric school buses. At least fifty percent of that funding should also be directed towards districts in disadvantaged communities that have carried a disproportionate burden of transportation pollution from dirty, diesel fueled buses.

Most school buses on New York’s roads are powered by diesel. They carry millions of children to and from school every day. Diesel exhaust is toxic to the human body. Exposure can lead to serious health issues, and children’s developing lungs are especially sensitive to these effects. That’s why the American Lung Association is urging Albany to transition to zero-emission school buses. A transition to electric vehicles, including school buses, would provide major public health and climate benefits.

School buses in New York carry 2.3 million children to and from school every day. Nationally, 95% of these buses are diesel-powered. There is clear scientific evidence demonstrating the effects of diesel exhaust exposure on the human body, including asthma attacks, premature deaths, and cancer. Children are especially vulnerable to poor air quality, as their brains and respiratory systems are still developing.

A minimum $300 million investment over five years from the state will make it possible for local school districts to transition from all diesel school buses to 100 percent zero-emission electric school buses by 2035. That means healthier air for millions of kids. Tell the New York State legislature that the wheels on the bus need to be powered by electric school buses.
