A National Asthma Public Policy Agenda – 2022 Update is a set of public policy priorities that, if implemented, would greatly reduce asthma morbidity and mortality. The agenda was first developed in 2009. Since then, there have been several notable accomplishments advancing the goals of the agenda, including the passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in 2010, the adoption of stricter national air standards for particle pollution in 2012 and ozone in 2015 and the 2018 implementation of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s smokefree public housing policy. The agenda was initially developed and then updated by a broad, multi-disciplinary group of asthma specialists, medical professionals, and public health and policy experts. To be successful, the policy recommendations need to be adopted by multiple stakeholder groups at all levels.
The National Asthma Public Policy Agenda consists of 22 public policy recommendations in six categories:
The American Lung Association encourages asthma-focused organizations and stakeholders to download the National Asthma Public Policy Agenda to begin advocating for these policies at the local, state and federal levels.
