In the United States, clinical research has been described as fragmented, slow, and costly due in large part to inadequate enrollment of participants. There is also a lack of diversity in research, leading to inequities in scientific discovery. The return of individual research results (IRRs) is an underused strategy for supporting recruitment, retention and diversity. IRRs are the results for a specific study participant from a scientific investigation. For example, in genomics research, an IRR could be whether a research participant possesses a particular gene variant under study. In 2018, the U.S. government published that returning valid and actionable IRRs is the ethical responsibility of research teams. However, no tools exist to assist research teams in returning research results. Without established best practices and tested tools, research results are not returned. We aim to describe the return of results process from the perspective of three stakeholders: study teams, research participants and healthcare providers. Using a human-centered design approach, we will develop a return of results tool to facilitate the return of results process for all stakeholders.
