David Au, MD is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Washington, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and directs the Center of Innovation for Veteran-Centered and Value Driven Care. He has experience with the overall management of complex clinical and research programs. Dr. Au's clinical work and research has focused on smoking-related lung diseases and in particular chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer. Dr. Au's had a long standing interest in the effects of comorbidity on patients with COPD as well as improving care delivery and access to specialty medicine in primary care settings, as well as experience at conducting multisite intervention trials in primary and specialty care settings, and with managing data architecture for complex multi-site studies, analyses and behavioral interventions. He serves on standard setting organizations including National Committee for Quality Assurance and the American Board of Internal Medicine Pulmonary Board Exam Writing Committee. He is a founding member of the COPD Outcomes-based Network for Clinical Effectiveness and Research Translation, and co-Directs the Office of Specialty Care Transformation Evaluation Center, a QUERI Center focused on improving safety and value through de-implementation of low value care and lead the pulmonary Specialty Care Access Network-Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes for the VA's VISN20 region.
